Hyperthyroidism and Its Symptoms
When the thyroid glands become overactive, an excessive production of thyroid hormone occurs. This condition is called hyperthyroidism. Thyroid hormones are in charge of regulating metabolism. And so, hyperthyroid symptoms usually reflect an increased metabolic rate. This includes increased appetite, gradual weight loss, increased feeling of thirst, restlessness, heat intolerance, nervousness, irritability, increased bowel movement, excessive sweating, tremors, rapid heart rate, decreased concentration, fatigue, and irregular or scanty menstruation for women. In severe and untreated cases of hyperthyroidism, more complicated symptoms arise, such as irregular heart rhythm or palpitation. A group of symptoms called thyroid storm could also happen. It is composed of fever, high blood pressure, and heart failure. Usually, an older person with hyperthyroidism develops this thyroid storm. Therefore, when you feel any of the symptoms stated in the previous sentences, consult your physician right away so that proper medical intervention can be done. Do not allow complications to happen because it would be difficult to treat a severe hyperthyroid condition.
